How Breeding Works in Palworld

Breeding is one of the most important systems in Palworld. By pairing two parent pals together at a Breeding Farm, you can produce powerful offspring with unique traits. This guide explains everything you need to know about Palworld breeding mechanics, from breeding power to offspring determination.

What Is Pal Breeding?

Pal breeding in Palworld allows you to combine two pals -- a male and a female parent -- at a Breeding Farm to produce a new pal offspring. The child pal is determined by the specific combination of the two parents. Unlike random egg hatching, breeding gives you precise control over which pal you get, making it the most reliable way to obtain rare and legendary pals.

The Breeding Farm becomes available once you reach Technology Level 19. You will need to craft a Cake and place it in the Breeding Farm's storage box to initiate the breeding process. After the two pals finish breeding, they produce an egg that you can hatch in an Egg Incubator. For more details on game mechanics, check the Palworld Wiki breeding page.

Understanding Breeding Power

Every pal in Palworld has a hidden stat called Breeding Power (also referred to as "Breeding Combo Rank" or "Internal ID"). This number is the key mechanic that determines which offspring two parents will produce. Breeding power values range from very low numbers for legendary pals to very high numbers for common pals.

Legendary
Breeding Power 100 or less
Hardest to obtain; very specific parent combos required
Rare
Breeding Power 101 - 500
Moderately difficult; fewer breeding options available
Common
Breeding Power over 500
Easy to find and breed; many parent combinations

When two parents breed, the game calculates the average of their breeding power values and then looks up which pal corresponds to the nearest result. This is why pairing two very different pals can produce surprising offspring -- the game is matching the midpoint of their breeding powers to the closest pal.

How Offspring Are Determined

The breeding outcome in Palworld follows a two-step process:

1

Check Special Combos First

The game first checks if the two parents match a special (unique) breeding combination. Some pals can only be bred through specific pairings that override the normal formula. For example, certain fusion pals and variant pals require exact parent matches.

2

Calculate Average Breeding Power

If no special combo is found, the game averages the breeding power of both parents. The resulting number is matched to the nearest pal's breeding power value to determine the child. This means a parent with 1000 breeding power and a parent with 200 breeding power will produce a pal near the 600 breeding power range.

Pro Tip: Use our Breeding Calculator to instantly see what offspring any two parents will produce, without needing to memorize breeding power values.

Step-by-Step Palworld Breeding Guide

Follow these steps to breed pals in Palworld:

  1. 1

    Unlock the Breeding Farm

Reach Technology Level 19 and build a Breeding Farm at your base. You will need 100 Wood, 20 Stone, and 50 Fiber.

  2. 2

    Craft a Cake

Bake a Cake using a Cooking Pot. The recipe requires Flour (5), Red Berries (8), Milk (7), Egg (8), and Honey (2). Assign pals with farming, ranching, and gathering work suitabilities to help produce these ingredients.

  3. 3

    Select Your Parent Pals

Choose one male and one female pal to breed. Use our Reverse Lookup tool to find which parent pairs produce the pal you want.

  4. 4

    Assign Parents to the Farm

Pick up each parent pal and throw them into the Breeding Farm area. Place the Cake into the farm's storage chest.

  5. 5

    Wait for the Egg

The breeding process takes some time. Once complete, an egg will appear in the Breeding Farm. Pick it up and place it in an Egg Incubator.

  6. 6

    Hatch Your New Pal

The egg will hatch after a set incubation period. The environment temperature near the incubator can speed up or slow down hatching. Match the egg type to the ideal temperature for faster results.

Breeding Tips for Beginners

Start with Common Pals

Common pals (breeding power over 500) are easy to catch and can be combined in many ways. Start by breeding common pals to understand the system before aiming for legendaries.

Build a Cake Production Line

Cakes are the bottleneck of breeding. Assign pals with Farming, Ranching, and Gathering to your base to automate ingredient production. Keep multiple Cooking Pots running.

Use the Reverse Lookup Tool

Instead of guessing parent combinations, use our Reverse Lookup tool to search for every possible parent pair that produces a specific pal.

Plan Multi-Step Breeding Chains

Some legendary pals cannot be bred directly from wild-caught pals. You may need to breed intermediate pals first. Our Path Finder tool maps out the full chain for you.

Passive Skills Matter

Offspring can inherit passive skills from their parents. When breeding for competitive pals, pay attention to which passive skills the parents carry, as strong skills like Lucky, Legend, and Swift can be passed down.

Gender Matters

You need one male and one female parent. If you have the right parent combination but both pals are the same gender, you will need to catch or breed a pal of the opposite gender.
